Why “doing nothing” can’t be the cure

Visiting her son in Scotland’s Cairngorms made Maaike de Graaf, a restoration ecologist, realise how much landscape diversity the Netherlands has lost, largely from pollution. Many here believe “doing nothing” helps forests, but she sees active management as essential. Our forests face many stresses, and we must use all tools to restore them—and communicate this complex reality clearly.
