Disturbances – although a natural part of ecosystems – are putting Europe’s forests under unprecedented pressure. In addition, climate-driven extreme events and past management practices have intensified disturbance frequency and severity. Hotspots of vulnerability highlight the urgent need for adaptive strategies, as traditional risk management methods can no longer address the escalating risks.

The Policy Brief investigates how disturbances are putting Europe’s forests under unprecedented pressure. Hotspots of vulnerability highlight the urgent need for adaptive strategies, as traditional risk management methods can no longer address the escalating risks. We provide RESONATE findings and recommendations on (i) why forest owners need to better understand the risks of climate change and diversify their management strategies; (ii) how proactive adaptive measures, including adjustments to tree species selection and forest composition, can be developed; (iii) when disturbances can provide opportunities for forest adaptation.
