Climate change and disturbances are reshaping forests and the wood industry, with e.g. storms and bark beetle outbreaks in countries like Germany and Czechia lowering the availability of profitable wood. This RESONATE Policy Brief provides findings and recommendations on strengthening resilience of forest value chains.

The Policy Brief explores how climate change and disturbances are reshaping forests and the wood industry, with e.g. storms and bark beetle outbreaks in countries like Germany and Czechia lowering the availability of profitable wood. These disturbances impact the wood supply chain, causing short-term issues like fluctuating wood supply with reduced wood quality and lower roundwood prices and potential long-term shifts toward mixed forests with more broadleaved wood assortments. We provide RESONATE findings and recommendations on (i) why it is crucial to raise awareness about increasing resilience along the wood value chain, e.g. through investments in wood storage capacity and improved transport logistics; (ii) how industries can adapt by finding valuable uses for more broadleaved species, and by developing alternative hardwood applications; (iii) why forest managers and processors should collaborate more closely to secure wood supply.
