As a general principle to emerge from our work is that consideration of upscaling should be a continuous process from the start of a pilot project through to its conclusion. Without this, the design of the pilot or demonstration site may not tackle the right issues or reach the right audience.
Developing a strategy will help you to connect to top-down approaches, to identify how your demo or pilot project fits into the much bigger picture, and to highlight where your work can have the greatest impact.
Upscaling from a local site needs a strategic approach to start mapping the potential route to upscaling. This will involve consideration of why upscaling of your project is important, who the key upscaling actors are likely to be, what issues need to be addressed and where restoration is a priority. We address each of these issues in this section and followed with a section with advice and examples on how to address key issues, drawing on wider learning from the SUPERB project. Finally, the route-map should summarize a set of key recommendations for those taking your work forward. We describe these questions in a linear fashion, but in reality, the process is likely to be iterative.
As starting point for developing a route-map for upscaling you need to provide motivation for why upscaling of your work is needed.
Identifying aktors and stakeholders that have the mandate and resources is an important step.
To identify potential areas where the intended restoration can be performed and providing recommendation on how to prioritze among areas is of strategic importance
