Guidelines for the Development of Upscaling Plans

3. Where should restoration be prioritised? Identify the location, scale and impact of upscaling

To identify potential areas where the intended restoration can be performed and providing recommendation on how to prioritze among areas is of strategic importance

Setting spatial scale. Identification of the spatial scale for restoration sets the border of the initiative – what is the potential for what you learned to be implemented across a much larger area? It has direct implication on which stakeholders to consider and relate to governance as policies and regulations may vary across jurisdictions. Hence, the geographical extent constitutes a scale that should be defined. If the landscape/s are highly heterogenous in terms of habitats, biodiversity and land-use it will be challenging to develop a coherent and relevant restoration program. However, at the same time a larger scale opens for more options and alternative sites to implement restoration and allow prioritization among alternative areas. A larger scale also opens for the possibility to explore a range of alternative options/scenarios for upscaling.
