Identifying aktors and stakeholders that have the mandate and resources is an important step.
Identifying the primary actor/s in a large restoration initiative is central for transferring the knowledge gained from your pilot project (see links below for stakeholder engagement in SUPERB). Who some of these stakeholders are may be evident already at the onset of your pilot, but the primary stakeholders in a demo or pilot are likely to be different to those in a larger scale restoration project. The PESTEL analysis recommended in subtopic 4 will help to identify more of these stakeholders. Hence, the development of an upscaling route-map should be seen as an iterative process where a better understanding of key actors is gained so that your final upscaling route-map is fine tuned to a target audience
that can lead larger restoration projects and action.
Forest Storytelling and Engagement for Change offers a range of practical tools and starting points to support those living and working with forests to map which kinds of stories are told and to explore how to tell stories that can make a difference.
Engaging local communities and other important stakeholders was a key part of the work undertaken by twelve forest restoration demonstration areas (demos) during the SUPERB project. In this document, you can find the overarching strategy developed by SUPERB to guide this engagement. Below, you can find out more about the positive effects that implementing this strategy had on the demos’ restoration work. The diversity of these impacts reveals the many ways in which an embedded stakeholder engagement approach can improve the efficacy and long-term sustainability of forest restoration projects.
This policy and practice brief brings together insights from the four EU Horizon 2020 Green Deal “Restoration Cluster” projects, SUPERB, MERLIN, REST-COAST and WaterLANDS, offering recommendations on how to activate stakeholder engagement for the successful delivery of NRR targets, as well as concrete examples and tools to support stakeholder engagement throughout the process.
