Introduction
Natural regeneration relies on the establishment of trees from natural seed dispersal or coppice, rather than planting. It can restore forest cover, maintain or increase tree species diversity, and enhance structural heterogeneity, while reducing stand establishment costs. Studies from European forests show that natural regeneration is often successful following disturbances and can create a regeneration layer with high density and species diversity. However, regeneration success depends on suitable site conditions, adequate seed sources, light availability, browsing pressure and competition from ground vegetation. Where suitable conditions are met, prioritizing natural regeneration offers an effective approach to stand establishment.
