P7-A2-3 Landscape habitat networks and connectivity

Connected habitat networks allow species to move and disperse across forest landscapes.

Introduction

Landscape habitat network management means planning forests as part of a connected landscape rather than managing individual stands in isolation. It aims to maintain and restore networks of habitats that allow species to move and disperse across the landscape. Research shows that habitat fragmentation reduces biodiversity, disrupts ecosystem functioning and limits connectivity, whereas connected habitat networks improve the movement of organisms, increase landscape resilience and support long-term conservation goals.
