Integrative Forest Management Guidelines

P3. Promoting natural tree regeneration

Natural tree regeneration supports resilient, diverse, and structurally complex forests while maintaining local genetic resources and ecological continuity. Natural regeneration should be prioritized where suitable seed sources, advance regeneration, and favourable site conditions are present.

P3-A1 Prioritizing natural regeneration

Prioritizing natural regeneration can be an effective approach to stand establishment. Successful regeneration depends on suitable site conditions and sufficient seed sources.

P3-A2 Advance regeneration in mature stands

Maintaining advance regeneration can facilitate forest recovery following disturbance and reduce the need for planting or sowing. Silvicultural interventions can promote its establishment before harvesting and protect existing regeneration during harvesting operations.

P3-A3 Herbivore and browsing management

Managing herbivore pressure is important for successful forest regeneration and maintaining desired tree species composition. Where browsing pressure is high, measures such as regulating ungulate populations or protecting regeneration may be required.

P3-A4 Maintaining pioneer tree species

Pioneer tree species provide multiple benefits for forest recovery, biodiversity, habitat provision, and long-term forest resilience.
